The new year has come and gone and I did not do a typical Year-End Review / New-Year Preview articles where the movies are concerned.

Scores JukeboxThe more I pondered, the more difficult it was to consider doing one when the number of movies I caught in our cinemas was not as significant as it could be. On top of that, we don’t often get the “good stuff” so I didn’t get to watch / haven’t seen flicks like The Revenant, Creed, Joy, The Hateful Eight, Anomalisa, Steve Jobs, Room, Macbeth (which had a two-shows-a-day, two week run at a theatre, no publicity), and oh-so-many others. The simple reason is that our local domineering distributor feel they can’t market these movies locally, favouring the typical action or horror flicks, much in line with the current studio mentality.

So, by now, the Oscar nominations are out (see here, although the link may be useless in a couple of months). I figure… based on how the Golden Globes went, why not try predicting a few of the results…

Here’s what I think the results will be like (and keeping in mind I haven’t seen some of these movies):-

Best Picture – The Revenant

Best Actor – Leonardo diCaprio

Best actor (Supporting) – Sylvester Stallone

Best Actress – Brie Larson

Best Actress (Supporting) – Jennifer Jason Leigh

Best Animated Feature – Anomalisa (but it’ll go to Inside Out)

Best Cinematography – Mad Max (but it’ll go to The Revenant)

Best Costume Design – Cinderella

Best Directing – Alejandro G Inarrritu (The Revenant)

Best Film Editing – The Big Short

Best Make-up – Mad Max

Best Song – Writing’s on The Wall by Sam Smith (Spectre)

Best Score – Ennio Morricone (The Hateful Eight)

Best Production Design – Mad Max

Best Animated Short – Sanjay’s Super Team

Best Sound Editing – Sicario

Best Sound Mixing – Star Wars

Best Visual Effects – The Martian

Best Adapted Screenplay – The Big Short (may go to Room)

Best Screenplay – Ex Machina (not likely)

I can’t comment on the Documentary categories or the Short Films. Rather disappointed Lava didn’t make the list for Best animated Short. Absolutely love that one.

It’ll be a while before I know if my guesses are close enough and by then, I may have had the chance to watch some of these elusive movies.

In the meantime, it’s back to the edit for Year Three, and then there’s a quick rewrite for the script.
